Position Function:

Perform serology, bacteriology, virology, and other laboratory tests on mammalian and poultry samples to obtain data for monitoring programs and accurate diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Salary Grade:  13

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following examples are intended as illustrations only of the various types of duties assigned in positions allocated to this classification. The absence of specific statements of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment of the position.

1) Perform tests on veterinary specimens pertaining to serology, bacteriology, virology and molecular diagnostics (including but not limited to ELISA, hemagglutination, gel immunodiffusion, bacterial culture, viral isolation, and PCR-based procedures) according to corresponding Standing Operating Procedures.
2) Assist with procedures, as needed, in different laboratory areas, and collaborate with other laboratory personnel.
3) Perform QA/QC duties and maintain QA/QC records required for AAVLD accreditation
4) Conduct laboratory housekeeping procedures (including but not limited to decontamination procedures, cleaning of glassware, and material preparation)
5) Maintain records of data and perform data analysis
6) Other job-related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors of Science degree with major course work in an appropriate field.

Two years of post-secondary training or education in a life sciences field or other field appropriate for the assignment and two years of related lab work.
-or-
Any equivalent combination of related experience and/or education approved by the Department of Human Resources Management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
• Skill in providing guidance and instruction in laboratory protocols and in the safe use of laboratory equipment.
• Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
• Knowledge of experimental procedures, protocols, and preparation techniques within area of specialty.
• Ability to set up, calibrate, operate, and maintain standard laboratory and test equipment.
• Knowledge of the cleaning specifications of various laboratory and/or medical equipment, fixtures, utensils, and related materials.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
• Work hours are unpredictable and may require including nights and weekends; frequent interruptions based on changing priorities; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
• Job frequently requires sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
Job occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
