Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Small Animal Surgery residency at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine is a three-year program. The primary objectives of the program are to train specialists in small animal surgery and to prepare residents for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Educational opportunities toward this end include daily case rounds, weekly journal club, weekly textbook reading assignments, and twice yearly mock board examinations. Residents will present in-house seminars twice yearly. Presentation of original research at a national meeting by the end of the residency is encouraged. All specialty service rotations required by the ACVS for completion of resident credentialing are available in-house.
The MSU Animal Health Center’s faculty includes board certified clinicians in surgery, internal medicine, neurology, anesthesiology, radiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, oncology, theriogenology and pathology. The surgical residency training program is currently directly supported on the clinic floor by 4 ACVS board-certified surgeons and one residency-trained surgeon. Service time will include rotations in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery with ACVS Diplomates, and in neurological surgery with ACVIM board-certified neurologists. Each resident spends approximately 9 months scheduled on clinic duty in surgery per year. The balance of time yearly will be available for additional specialty service training, time for research and travel to meetings, laboratories, or vacation. Residents will share primary surgical on-call duties throughout the residency, with surgery faculty assigned as back-up for all on-call shifts. Residents will also provide consultations for referring veterinarians and other hospital services, guidance and support for interns, and provide clinical teaching to veterinary students.
Concurrent enrollment in our research and thesis-based Masters of Veterinary Science program is expected as part of the residency program. Tuition for 6 hours per semester in the Masters program is free-of-charge. Participation in investigative research projects is strongly encouraged, and the resident will be expected to submit, as first author, a scientific manuscript for publication in a refereed journal. In-house funds are available to support resident projects on a competitive basis. A certificate of Residency Training is presented after successful completion of the 3 year residency program.
Minimum Qualifications:
1) A veterinary degree recognized by the AVMA and successful passing of the NAVLE licensure examination or successful completion of the ECFVG qualification process
2) US, Canadian, or Mexican citizenship or permanent resident of the US
3) Must be eligible to obtain a Mississippi Veterinary Practice License
4) Prior successful completion of either a small animal rotating internship or equivalent practice experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
