Position type: Full-Time 12-Month
Department: 191001 - Northern Gulf Institute
Location: Miami, FL
Categories: Professional
Position Open Date:

Position Function:

The Northern Gulf Institute is seeking an Ocean Modeler to join an interdisciplinary team in Miami, Florida. The primary role of the postdoc is to develop a 4D-var data assimilation framework within a high-resolution regional ocean model, aiming to improve the representation of ocean biochemical variables.

Salary Grade:  UC

Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges.  For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Department Profile:

The Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Institute comprised of six academic institutions that are geographically distributed across the U.S. Gulf Coast states. The six NGI member institutions are Mississippi State University (lead), the University of Southern Mississippi, Florida State University, Louisiana State University, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the Dauphin Island Sea Laboratory. Together with NOAA and in support of their strategic plan, NGI conducts research on interconnections among Gulf of Mexico environments, habitats, resources, and people and engages in outreach to help others learn about and make decisions based on these interconnections.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties include but are not limited to:

(1) Configuration of a 4D-var framework: The postdoc will be responsible for the setup and initial configuration of the 4D-var data assimilation framework. This involves integrating the 4D-var system with an existing regional ocean-biogeochemical model.

(2) Conducting numerical model experiments for calibration: This process will involve adjusting various parameters and settings within the 4D-var system to optimize its performance in assimilating observational data and improving the model's predictive capabilities for biogeochemical variables.

(3) Full implementation and validation of the 4D-var framework: Upon successful calibration, the postdoc will undertake the full implementation of the 4D-var framework. This involves rigorous testing and validation of the system's performance using independent datasets and established metrics. The validation process will assess the framework's ability to accurately constrain the model's biogeochemical state, reduce uncertainties, and provide more realistic simulations of ocean processes.

(4) Presenting significant research findings at scientific conferences.

(5) Publishing relevant research results in peer-reviewed journals.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in oceanography or a related field, and experience in ocean modeling

Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in Data Assimilation
Expertise in ocean biogeochemical research.
Experience working with the Regional Ocean Model System (ROMS) or the Modular Ocean Model version 6 (MOM6)
Knowledge in data science programming

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Demonstrated experience in ocean modeling
Familiarity with data science programming and high-performance computing (HPC) environments
A good publication record, including first-author publications in relevant fields.
