The Project Coordinator develops and implements communications strategy and plans, including branding and messaging for The Stennis Institute. The Project Coordinator is responsible for helping advance The Institute's impact, public service, and outreach goals through the promotion of its expertise, research, services, and accomplishments via a variety of outreach channels. These include, but are not limited to: The Stennis Institute website, public news outlets, social media, collateral materials, and events. The Project Coordinator reports directly to the Executive Director, maintains close and routine communication with The Institute program teams, and coordinates with the University's Office of Public Affairs communications staff as appropriate.

Salary Grade:  13

Department Profile:

The John C. Stennis Institute of Government and Community Development (Stennis Institute) is a public service, training, and applied research unit at Mississippi State University, with its main office located at the Starkville, MS campus. The Stennis Institute performs a threefold mission: (1) to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Mississippi state and local governments through basic and applied research, training, technical assistance, service, and community/economic development activities, (2) to provide technical assistance and research for both rural development in Mississippi and regional ativities in the Southeast and (3) to promote civic education and citizen involvement in the political process. The Stennis Institute has a prescence in several locations across the state and is a leader in public service executive training and local government research and outreach.

Communications and Marketing

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. The primary functions of the position will include, but not be limited to:
a. Strategy: Develops and implements communications strategy and plans, including branding, messaging, and marketing for the Institute.
b. Website and social media: Oversees the Institute's web site, including development, content organization, design and maintenance -- supporting communications, marketing and impact goals. Develops, implements and maintains social media strategy.
c. Collateral material and publications: Conceptualizes and develops collateral materials and publications. Coordinates and delivers a quarterly Stennis Institute newsletter and Annual Report.
d. Coordination: Coordinates key SIG events with support of SIG staff, including press forums, executive trainings, student engagement outreach and other events. Supports development and coordination of proposals, presentations, and other special projects.
e. Networking: Outreach efforts consist of developing and maintaining networks/contacts across the State and region.
2. Contribute written material for electronic publications and communications for the Institute and the University.
3. Provide back-up graphic design support, from concept to delivery, for publication materials and marketing pieces.
4. Provide training as needed to departmental staff on best practices for creating, managing, monitoring and developing content for social media channels.
5. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related field with a minimum of three years directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Preferred Qualifications:

When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Excellent writing skills, with experience in both feature and news writing.
• Demonstrated competence with desktop publishing software, including Adobe PhotoShop, InDesign and Illustrator, or comparable applications.
• Familiarity with all Microsoft Office applications.
• Familiarity with Web-based communication usage and styles.
• Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
• Ability to prioritize competing demands and to meet deadlines.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
• Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends for special events.
• Must be willing to travel to conduct in-person interviews, when needed.
• Must hold a valid driver's license.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
• No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
• No or very limited physical effort required.
• Job may require working evenings, weekends and holidays. Must be available for in-state and out-of state travel as needed.
