Position Function:
Responsible for performing law enforcement duties, conducting shift training, and the supervision of campus police officers and other members for a specific shift or assignment.
Salary Grade: 14

Department Profile:
Mississippi State University Police Department is charged with providing for the safety of all the students, faculty, staff, and guests who attend class, work, live, and visit our campus, and with the security of university buildings and property. Mississippi State University police officers are always working and available to assist you. The department provides a comprehensive array of law enforcement services through a dedicated staff of more than 36 sworn, state commissioned police officers and 10 full-time support personnel. All MSU Police officers are certified by the Mississippi Peace Officers Minimum Standards Commission and have the same authorities and must meet the same expectations as law enforcement officers in any community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Serves as the shift supervisor and provides supervision to subordinates.
2. Enters shift data into the computer.
3. Provides training for the shift, including documentation of such training.
4. Assists in the field training of new recruits.
5. Serves on university committees as required.
6. Conducts monthly evaluations of subordinates' performance.
7. Makes appropriate assignment of shift employees according to the needs of the department.
8. Coordinates with the Lieutenant/Patrol Supervisor for the provision of any special services.
9. Performs extensive work in computer applications such as word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.
10. Performs patrol duties when not engaged in supervisory duties including, but not limited to:
Investigate violations of law or university rules.
Prepare written reports on serious incidents or as required.
Enforce parking and traffic rules.
Patrol and inspect buildings and facilities for safety or security concerns.
Coordinate with higher authority on specific traffic, security, or safety concerns.
11. Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Certified police officer. High School diploma or equivalent. Five years of law enforcement experience with one year or greater in a supervisory role.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certified police officer in Mississippi. Previously served in a supervisory role at the rank of Corporal or higher. Successful completion of 60 semester or 90 quarter hours or more of college coursework from an accredited college or university. Demonstrated history of success as evidenced by performance evaluations and supervisory recommendations.
Knowledge and skills in database, word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail, Internet, and desktop publishing computer applications. Training and experience as a Field Training Officer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to motivate and supervise subordinates. Good physical condition. Demonstrate proficiency with computer applications currently used by patrol officers or investigators.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Must be able to work rotating shifts, out-of-doors, and in a variety of assignments including foot, vehicle, and bicycle patrol. Must be able to deal with stressful situations, including life-threatening incidents. Must not object to using force against another person when legally justified.
