TThe Department of Interior Design at Mississippi State University invites applicants for 2 tenure-track appointments at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank with an anticipated start date of Fall 2024. We seek two energetic faculty members to join our dynamic, and growing Interior Design Department. Successful candidates with will demonstrate expertise and experience in integrating emerging approaches to interior design in their research, teaching, and creative practice. We encourage applicants whose scholarship falls into one of the following areas aligned with emerging departmental, college, and university priorities: design for health and well-being, human factors and ergonomics, and accessible and inclusive design. The successful candidate will contribute to the university's mission as a land grant public institution with a Carnegie classification of R1 (Very High Research Activity) through their teaching, research, and service.

Salary Grade:  UC

For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Department Profile:

The Department of Interior Design, housed in the College of Architecture, Art, and Design, serves over 200 undergraduate and approximately 25 graduate students and offers a BS and minor in Interior Design at the undergraduate and a certificate and MFA in Historic Preservation at the graduate level. Accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), the undergraduate interior design curriculum provides a robust studio-based design education complemented with project-based technical courses and electives that prepare students for a career in the contemporary interior design profession. One of the fastest growing departments in the College, the Department of Interior Design has a long history of student success, with regular recognition at the regional and national level and high placement percentages for our graduates. The faculty in the department collaborate with colleagues from various departments across the university, including the School of Architecture, the Department of Art, the Department of Building Construction Science, the Department of Communication, and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Faculty in the Interior Design Department have opportunities to teach undergraduate courses in interior design and graduate courses in the Master of Fine Arts in Historic Preservation. As a faculty member in an undergraduate academic program, the successful candidates will actively engage in pedagogy, curriculum development, student advising, innovative teaching, research, and interdisciplinary initiatives within the college. The successful candidates will teach undergraduate design studio courses and lecture courses at the undergraduate or graduate level based on departmental needs and the candidates’ expertise. Responsibilities as a tenure-track faculty also include the development of a successful research agenda that results in scholarly productivity in the form of peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and funded research grants. Additional responsibilities include university service and community outreach.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Earned a Master’s or terminal degree in Interior Design or a closely related professional
field
• NCIDQ certified or eligible to become NCIDQ certified
• At least 3 years of work experience in a design-related field
• Experience with and competency in relevant industry-standard design computing and
visualization software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe Creative Cloud, SketchUp)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Teaching experience in higher education
• Three to five years of design experience in an Interior design practice or related
experience in the design industry
• MFA or Ph.D. in interior design or a related discipline
• LEED, WELL, AAHID, NKBA, or other relevant certifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to stay engaged and current with evolutions in design, practice, technology, and processes
Excellent communication skills
Knowledge of foundational and advanced design concepts necessary for educating future professionals in the interior design industry
Ability to work closely with a team for the development of curriculum, research endeavors, and student engagement
Candidates should also demonstrate evidence of or verified potential for establishing a publication record, grant procurement and university-level teaching
Familiarity with Regional, National, and International building codes and regulations
Ability to analyze and synthesize design documentations
