Position Function:
Repairing, maintaining, altering, and installing heating, ventilating, and air conditioning units and combination heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. The person will also be expected to provide support to other building maintenance personnel on various tasks.
Salary Grade: HVC-2

This position is located at the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville, MS.
Anticipated Appointment Date:
December 2024.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Install, maintain, and repair ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment.
• Identify maintenance risks on equipment.
• Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults for HVAC systems.
• Clean, adjust, and repair systems.
• Perform repairs (routine and emergency) promptly and efficiently.
• Keep logs and records of all maintenance functions.
• Interact with researchers, staff, visitors, and contractors in a professional, timely and courteous manner.
• Comply with service standards, work instructions, and work order requirements.
• Ability to occasionally work after hours, over weekends, and on holidays with short or no notice. Comply with all University and industry safety guidelines and regulations.
• Be knowledgeable and comply with all safety and mechanical codes.
• Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED.
• 2+ year experience as an HVAC technician, and willingness to continue education in HVAC field (mostly commercial, some residential).
• EPA approved universal refrigerant handler’s certificate
• Valid MS driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Familiarity with HVAC components and systems and the ability to disassemble and reassemble complex systems.
• Proficient computer and email skills.
• Understanding of advanced principles of air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating including replacing compressors, coils, bearings, seals, etc.
• Working knowledge of boiler and chiller systems.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficient in reading schematics and work plans.
• Troubleshooting skills such as identifying problems and determining how to correct them.
• Attention to detail ensuring all installations, maintenance, and repairs are performed correctly.
• Experience with electricity from low voltage to 480v.
• Working knowledge of other mechanical systems like electronic gate systems, ice makers, etc.
• Self-starter with ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
1. Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures.
2. Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; climbing ladders, heavy lifting, pushing or pulling required of objects up to 100 pounds and the ability to push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop, stack, crouch, climb, kneel and balance as part of performing job tasks. Some ladder work and working in confined spaces will be required.
3. Must be willing to be called in after hours for emergency work if necessary.
4. Ability to exercise tact and discretion with customers and the public.
