Position Function:
Provide ASL interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing students. Regularly perform interpreting services. Facilitate communication between hearing and deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals.
Employees hired into Intermittent positions are limited to working no more than 720 hours per fiscal year.
Salary Grade: UC

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provide interpreting service for deaf and hard of hearing students in classroom, labs, and assemblies.
2. Prepare for interpreting assignments by learning new terminology and course material as needed.
3. Work effectively in a team with other sign language interpreters to foster the delivery of effective services.
4. Meet with students to assess and determine communication needs in speech, lipreading, signs and fingerspelling. As needed, match students with interpreters and match interpreters with appropriate classes for skill level.
5. Adhere to all University, state and Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf standards and policies, as well as Mississippi state laws.
6. Provide ASL interpreting as required for campus events as determined by DRC.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

1. Fluent in American Sign Language.
2. Ability to interpret with a high degree of accuracy, college-level curricula.
3. Ability to be registered from the Mississippi Office on Deaf and Hard of Hearing for Quality Assurance Screening.
Substitution:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Hold national interpreter certification.
2. Hold advanced degree.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Ability to pay attention to details with organizational skills.
2. Ability to understand and execute complex instructions.
3. Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills.
4. Ability to use a variety of database and spreadsheet programs.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
1. Requires limited lifting of files and records up to 25 pounds. Work is primarily performed in a temperature-controlled facility.
2. Frequent external imposed deadlines; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
3. Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
