Position Function:
Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine seeking a compassionate and organized Large Animal Afterhours Care Manager to join our team. The Care Manager will be responsible for coordinating patient care, supervision of afterhours staff, ensuring efficient use of resources, and facilitating communication between faculty and overnight staff. Candidates must possess the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with staff, faculty, students, and other administrators; provide leadership; and contribute to the growth and improvement of the large animal hospital. This role is critical in promoting patient-centered care and scheduled treatments.
Salary Grade: 15

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Assessment and Planning:
o Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients’ medical needs
o Develop individualized care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team
o Identify and address barriers to care of patients and flow of hospital
o Ensure the delivery of high-quality veterinary care
o Stay updated on the latest advancements in large animal veterinary medicine
Care Coordination:
o Coordinate and monitor the implementation of care plans
o Facilitate communication between faculty and staff
o Ensure timely and efficient transitions of care
o Ensure adherence to best practices and industry standards
Resource Management:
o Monitor patient progress and adjust care plans as necessary in collaboration with faculty
o Advocate for patient and staff needs and preferences within the hospital
Documentation and Compliance:
o Ensure maintenance of accurate and up-to-date patient records
o Ensure compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards.
o Participate in quality improvement initiatives and case reviews as requested by faculty
Education and Support:
o Provide education and support to staff and students regarding technical skills, disease processes, and care plans
o Empower staff and students to actively participate in the care and treatment plans and protocols
o Offer guidance to staff and students on navigating hospital systems and accessing available resources
Leadership and Supervision:
o Oversee the overnight operations of the large animal hospital
o Lead and supervise afterhours support staff and manage students
o Complete staff annual reviews
o Gain familiarity with Human Resources procedures and manage personnel issues
Working Relations:
o Foster and promote positive relationships with faculty, staff and students
o Address faculty/staff concerns promptly and efficiently
• Staff Development
o Assist in conducting performance evaluations and provide feedback
o Encourage professional development and continuing education for staff members
o Develop and implement long-term goals and strategies for staff
o Identify opportunities for growth and expansion for staff
o Collaborate with staff to enhance hospital services
Facility Management
o Ensure hospital is well-maintained and equipped with necessary medical supplies and equipment
o Oversee the maintenance and repair of large animal hospital equipment
o Ensure a safe and clean environment for faculty, staff, students, and animals
Emergency Management:
o Ensure staff are trained in emergency procedures
Minimum Qualifications:
o Minimum of 2 years’ clinical experience as a large animal technician or equivalent
o Willingness to attain certification as veterinary technician within 4 years
o Completion of Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualifications:
o Certification as a veterinary technician AAS or veterinary technologist BS (CVT)
o Leadership experience
o Staff supervision

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
No unusual physical requirements. Requires some heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
Job frequently requires sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and handling objects with hands.
Job occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
