Position Function:
The small animal internship at Mississippi State University, College of Veterinary Medicine is a 12-month clinical program providing training in medicine and surgery. The program is designed to qualify the individual for entry into an approved residency program leading to board certification in a recognized veterinary specialty.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The interns predominately rotate through internal medicine (at least 17 weeks), surgery (at least 17 weeks) and emergency/critical care (10 weeks), with smaller time periods allotted to primary access (2 weeks), diagnostic imaging (1 week), anesthesiology (1 week), and electives (up to 2 weeks). Interns work under the supervision of senior clinicians and are responsible for daily services of the clinic, with a high proportion of predominately referral-level primary case care responsibilities. The interns cover emergency duty during nights and weekends on a rotation basis, and are expected to remain within the teaching hospital while on duty. Each intern will present a formal seminar each year to faculty, staff and vet students. The topic is selected by the intern. Other less formal presentations, such as ICU topic rounds, are required throughout the year. Additional activities include weekly surgery and medicine journal clubs. Interns will be exposed to at least one hour of traditional formal student/clinician teaching rounds each day, frequently also receive extra 30-60 minutes daily hours officer/faculty advanced case rounds exposure. Each intern is expected to submit at least 1 article for publication in a scientific journal of their choice. Opportunities for participation in special projects, classes, and laboratories are also available. Internal funding and elective time for small clinical research projects is also available, and internally funded intern projects frequently successfully leveraged to obtain external funding as well. The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine has a good track record for placing interns into highly competitive residency positions. Upon successful completion of the program, an internship certificate is awarded.
Minimum Qualifications:
Prerequisites other than being a graduate of a College of Veterinary Medicine: Graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Ability to handle, load, restrain, and work with large animals.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
