The ophthalmology program at Mississippi State University is excited to offer a residency training program.

Salary Grade:  12

Ophthalmology

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The resident will spend his/her time working on the ophthalmology service in the veterinary teaching hospital. All clinical duties of the resident will be conducted under supervision of the ophthalmologists and will include diagnosing and treating companion animals with ocular disease, managing inpatients, providing consultations for doctors from other hospital services and surrounding general practices, and contributing to the education of 3rd and 4th year veterinary students working in the teaching hospital. Surgical duties include various adnexal surgeries, enucleations, and other surgery deemed appropriate for the resident's level of training. It is anticipated that as the program progresses, the resident will require less supervision and ultimately be capable of independently delivering ophthalmic care. However, even this independent ophthalmic care will be conducted with consultation and input from the faculty ophthalmologists. The resident will participate in emergency duty to back up the small animal and equine rotating interns and residents. The ophthalmology resident is expected to see patients of the ophthalmology service presenting after-hours on emergency as well as provide back-up for the emergency/critical care service on any other after-hours ophthalmology cases. This duty is supported and shared by the ophthalmology faculty members.
The ophthalmology resident will participate in patient rounds daily with students and faculty ophthalmologists. As the residency progresses, the ophthalmology resident will have more responsibilities regarding patient rounds. Journal/literature club is held three times a month. Ocular histopathology rounds are held monthly with board-certified pathologists. The ophthalmology resident is expected to attend and participate in these rounds to expand their knowledge base. The resident will also be strongly encouraged to attend the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists annual meeting and will be given time off, and some financial assistance to attend this meeting will be available. A presentation to peers, students, and faculty must be given at the conclusion of the residency.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must be highly motivated and have previously completed a one-year internship or its equivalent in private practice (3 years). Candidates must have graduated from and AVMA accredited College of Veterinary Medicine and have passed the NAVLE prior to the start of the residency. Candidates must be eligible for licensure in the state of Mississippi.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
