Position Function:
The Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library is seeking a qualified and experienced individual to serve as a key faculty member, overseeing and advancing the mission of the library and its operations. The successful candidate should have a strong background in both academic history and public history. This position is integral to the mission, operations, and strategic planning of Ulysses S. Grant Library and its museum. This position reports to the Executive Director of the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library.
Salary Grade: UC
For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.
Department Profile:
The Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library is a historical organization dedicated to educating the public about Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. The USGPL serves as a research center for the study of the Civil War and Reconstruction through public engagement, museum exhibits, education outreach, and historical archival research. The library is located on the campus of Mississippi State University, and it serves as the main repository of the writings of U.S. Grant. It showcases much of that material in its museum alongside the Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana. The library also functions as the headquarters of the Ulysses S. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain a record of scholarly research/creative work, participate in professional service activities, and actively engage in faculty governance, in keeping with the tenure standards of the MSU Libraries.
- Provide expert insights into Ulysses S. Grant, his family history, and related historical contexts to patrons and the general public.
- Develop and implement strategies for effective community relations and public outreach.
- Maintain and expand donor relations, ensuring strong partnerships with stakeholders and benefactors.
- Serve as a liaison between Mississippi State University and the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library, fostering collaboration and alignment of goals.
- Organize and execute special events, including academic conferences, exhibitions, and public outreach programs.
- Supervise museum staff members.
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in history or a closely related field (ABDs will be considered with completion date within one year of start date).
- Knowledge of Ulysses S. Grant, his family, and current Grant-related scholarship.
- Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, stakeholders, and community members.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in public outreach, community relations, and museum visitor services.
- Knowledge of planning and executing special and academic events.
- Experience in a presidential library or similar institution.
