Position Function:
The individual filling this position will function at the professional research level and will collaborate with researchers involved in design and implementation of ASME NQA-1 qualified test systems for nuclear-grade HEPA-filter research. The function of this position is to coordinate and supervise shop services and oversee construction of testing systems. This position will also work with conceptual designs and provide practical design and construction. This individual will work with researchers to provide/suggest practical mechanical solutions to satisfy their requirements. Additional responsibilities will include ordering and maintaining inventory, shop personnel training, and safety.

Department Profile:
The Institute for Clean Energy Technology (ICET) at Mississippi State University is an interdisciplinary center comprised of research, and engineering design and development for industry and government partners. Our overall effort is focused on materials and components of vital safety systems used throughout the nuclear complex.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will have a strong emphasis on evaluation of factors influencing performance of nuclear grade HEPA filters. All research activities are subject to stringent quality control. The individual will receive training in nuclear quality assurance requirements.

• Supervise shop personnel
• Schedule labor time according to project needs in relation to all other ongoing projects
• Schedule equipment time according to project needs in relation to all other ongoing projects
• Assign work to the appropriate shop personnel
• Attend project review meetings to understand project needs and to assist in meeting project milestones
• Interpret researchers’ goals for an apparatus or process, taking that goal and applying the available labor and equipment to it to meet project goals
• Operation and maintenance of various pieces of equipment and machinery for testing and analysis on a variety of projects
• Training shop personnel and students on various pieces of equipment and machinery
• Participate in research testing activities, as required
• Order and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment
• Meet budget expectations
• Travel may be required
• Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Ten years of experience in machine shop operations with supervisory experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Electrical and welding experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with instruments used for making precise dimensional measurements using traditional methods is desirable. Individuals must have excellent written and oral communication skills and must have the ability to interact effectively with other professionals.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Testing is occasionally conducted continuously for up to 120 hours. Shift work may be required. Physical requirements include frequent walking and standing, and occasional reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping/kneeling/crouching, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Testing activities require assembly and disassembly of engineering scale test stands. This position will be responsible for assisting and/or safely coordinating these activities. The position may require the employee to work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation producing sources or chemicals are present. Employee is required to wear protective equipment.
Externally imposed deadlines that are set and revised beyond one’s control. Interruptions influence priorities. It is often difficult to anticipate the nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days. Meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to the position. Occasional exposure to demands and pressure from persons other than the immediate supervisor can be expected. Conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress may be experienced.
