Mississippi State University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Director for Student Services – Care & Concern. This position is an integral part of our efforts to support the success of our students by engaging in intentional strategies designed to address the needs of students who have challenges with academic, health, wellness, conduct, safety, or their general welfare. This position serves as a part of the Dean of Students' Office and reports to the Associate Director for Care & Concern while also maintaining a direct working relationship with other key stakeholders at the University who are responsible for wellness, health, safety, and general welfare issues to students. The Assistant Director for Student Services has primary responsibility for case management, collaboration and improved communication among departments or offices, assists in coordination of continuity of care and services for students, and assists in a coordinated team approach to student services and University response to needs. This position will also assist in overseeing and coordinating operations of MSU’s on campus food pantry and Food Security Network efforts

Salary Grade:  15

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assist the Dean of Students’ Office in matters relating to student affairs including advocating, assisting, navigation of student issues and student complaint resolution.
2. Travel between various University campuses to attend meetings, training and perform other duties as assigned.
3. Serve as a campus-wide resource for distressed students working with and communicating with University police, residence life staff, student counseling, student health services and academic departments.
4. Assist in overseeing and coordinating operations of MSU’s Bully’s Pantry, supervision of a graduate assistant/practicum students.
5. Assist the Dean of Students’ office in the care and concern of students by addressing submitted referrals and serving on the Care and Concern Team.
6. Coordinate assessment and reports for Care and Concern efforts/files as needed and run analysis on data obtained to increase efficiencies.
7. Meet with students and families concerning university processes.
8. Develop services and provide help to meet the daily needs of MSU students and parents by communicating and clarifying the resources available at MSU.
9. Assist the Dean of Students' Office in event and program management.
10. Serves on a variety of internal and external committees and task forces.
11. Maintains an "open door" policy in assuring that the services of the Dean of Students Office are accessible to all students and families.
12. Presents to faculty, staff and departments on issues that relate to students.
13. Manages and directs various functional areas within Student Services to develop a high performing team, while ensuring these areas have collaborative relationships with their colleagues on the Starkville Campus.
14. Serve in an on-call capacity.
15. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Education: Masters Degree with focus area in Counseling, Social Work, Student Affairs or other related Field.

Minimum Experience: Two years experience in higher education related field specifically working with students and families as it relates to Care & Concern.

Preferred Qualifications:

Maxient proficiency, housing and residence life, or behavioral intervention or any equivalent combination or experience and/or education approved by the Human Resources Department.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of customer service practices and concepts
2. Event planning and event management
3. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
4. Ability to build relationships with other University and community units
5. Excellent decision-making and time management skills.
6. Technical proficiency including the ability to navigate web based applications

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Requires light lifting of items for outreach events. Majority of all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility with an exception of outreach events. Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 20 pounds.
