Position Function:
The Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University invites applications for two full-time, nine-month, tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor in Meteorology, starting August 2026.
We are seeking dynamic, research-active scholars whose expertise aligns with one or more of the following high-priority areas:
• Physical Meteorology
• Satellite Meteorology
• Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP)
• Atmospheric Data Analysis
• Operational Weather Analysis and Forecasting (strongly preferred)
Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, and research. The ideal applicant will have experience or clear potential to contribute to both undergraduate and graduate instruction, particularly in support of our thriving Professional Meteorology and Broadcast Meteorology programs.
Salary Grade: UC
For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Mississippi State University is a comprehensive land-grant institution with a Carnegie R1 "Very High Research Activity" designation. The Department of Geosciences is home to one of the largest undergraduate meteorology programs in the nation and supports robust research in weather forecasting, atmospheric science, GIS, and environmental geosciences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Strong preference will be given to those with demonstrated research and teaching strengths and activities in the areas of Satellite Meteorology, Operational Forecasting, Physical Meteorology, and Dynamic Modeling and Data-Centric approaches to primarily midlatitude weather systems. While applicants with backgrounds in Climatology or Tropical Meteorology will be considered, they are a lower priority for this search.
The ideal candidate(s) will be expected to teach two courses per semester in their academic background area and develop a robust research program that includes supporting the Department of Geosciences’ M.S. and Ph.D. programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
• A Ph.D. in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field (ABD considered if degree will be completed by time of appointment).
• Evidence of scholarly productivity and potential to secure external funding.
• Commitment to inclusive teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Willingness to support both the on-campus and online teaching missions of the Department.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with operational forecasting, numerical modeling, or large-scale atmospheric datasets, especially satellite data.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines.
• Familiarity with the needs and goals of a land-grant institution.
• Ability to teach courses in Operational Meteorology, especially Weather Forecasting, both face to face and online.
