The Archaeological Project Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the Cobb Institute of Archaeology’s Curation Facility. This position involves maintaining existing collections, cataloging existing collections, conducting archaeological fieldwork, and integrating new collections into the facility. The person in this position will work closely with students, clients, members of descendant communities, state and federal representatives, and other stakeholders to maintain legal and ethical curation standards.

Salary Grade:  13

Department Profile:

The Cobb Institute of Archaeology is a research and service unit of the College of Arts & Sciences of Mississippi State University.
It was founded in 1971 to promote archaeological research and education at Mississippi State University related to the Middle Eastern origins of Western Civilization and to the Indians of the South, particularly in Mississippi.
The Institutes facilities house the Lois Dowdle Cobb Museum of Archaeology and its artifact collections. The Institute also manages a separate facility for the curation of research collections.
The Institutes staff hold formal cross-affiliations with the Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures where they serve as teaching faculty.

Staff archaeologists are involved in a full range of archaeological research, including basic cultural and historical investigations, field excavations, laboratory analysis and report preparation, as well as cultural resource management and public archaeology. The Institute works with businesses, municipalities, state, federal and international agencies to assist them in complying with antiquities regulations and with cultural resource and environmental laws.

Through affiliations with academic departments the Institute provides a wide range of opportunities for MSU undergraduate and graduate students to become engaged in archaeological research and study activities. The Institute also provides assistantships to students concentrating in archaeology in the Master’s Program in Applied Anthropology \of the Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures.
The annual program of the Institute features public lectures, tours and workshops, and the staff is routinely engaged in on-and off-campus outreach activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Oversee daily activities in the Cobb Institute of Archaeology’s Curation Facility.
• Supervise and coordinate student workers and graduate research assistants.
• Coordinate with stakeholders about the collections.
• Inventory and maintain archaeological collections.
• Develop budgets for lab and field projects.
• Supervise archaeological surveys and excavations.
• Supervise geophysical surveys.
• Collect and process geophysical data.
• Write reports for clients and agencies.
• Conduct public outreach.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education : Bachelors degree in related or relevant field
Experience: Three years experience working in Anthropology, archeological curation, archaeological fieldwork, and database management.
Strong organizational and communication skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Supervisory experience in archaeological curation.
• Supervisory experience in archaeological and geophysical fieldwork.
• Experience with ARCGIS Pro, Microsoft Access, RADAN, and Terrasurveyor.
• Experience in public outreach.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Work is primarily performed in an office and lab setting, but some outdoor fieldwork will occur.
• Lab work will involve regularly lifting and carrying boxes weighing approximately 50 lbs.
• Artifacts are stored in a location that is accessible only by stairs.
• Occasional travel will be required for fieldwork.
• Fieldwork may occur during extreme winter or summer temperatures.
• Fieldwork may occur in remote locations that are accessible only by walking.
• Fieldwork involves significant amounts of standing, kneeling, and walking.
• Fieldwork involves moving and carrying heavy equipment.
