Position Function:
To administer anesthetics to render patients insensitive to pain during surgical and other medical procedures, supervise/teach students in the practice of anesthesia, maintain equipment and keep related records.
Salary Grade: 13

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Set up and prepare anesthesia equipment prior to surgeries or other procedures. Set up appropriate monitoring equipment. Responsible for ensuring that anesthesia pharmacy supplies are adequately stocked and that all drugs are secure and accounted for. Instruct veterinary and veterinary technician students on correct procedures for administering anesthesia, case management, assign grades to students based on performance. Supervise and assist students during the anesthetic period, during anesthesia inducement and during patient recovery from anesthesia. Perform anesthesia procedures, including examining, preparing and positioning patients, interpreting blood work and chemistries, selecting drug regime and administering anesthetics. Assist with the administering of Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) examination; evaluate participants based on performance. Maintain records of drugs used and report appropriate charges. Prepare anesthesia log book and review.
Minimum Qualifications:
Trainee Level: Must possess a veterinary technology or technician degree. Must obtain certification within 1 calendar year of hire.
Level I: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Certification as a Veterinary Technician or Registered Nurse, 4 years of related experience.
Level II: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Certification as a Veterinary Technician or Registered Nurse, 4 years of related experience, plus 3 years experience as Anesthesia Technician I or 5 or more years experience in private practice.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

4. Skill in use of personal computers and related software applications.
5. Database management skills.

7. Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
8. Knowledge of human resources process, procedures, and documentation, as applicable to a public institution.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
No unusual physical requirements. Requires some heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
Job frequently requires sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and handling objects with hands.
Job occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
