This position will preserve the functionality of facilities and facility systems of the MS Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Lab, in Pearl, MS, by performing a variety of preventative, maintenance, and repair duties. The incumbent will collaborate and support Building Services Management staff at the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Salary Grade:  BMT-1

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Perform routine, preventive and reactive maintenance, and repair on buildings, equipment, structures, including HVAC units, electrical systems, plumbing, and safety equipment (e.g., fire alarms, smoke detectors).and other amenities.
2. Responsible for minor repairs which may include changing defective receptacles, ballasts, switches, outlets, light fixtures and bulbs, repair of valves, replacement of washers and gaskets, replacement of plumbing fixtures, replacing hinges, door closures, service door closures, replace floor tiles, caulk windows, replace glass and reset doors
3. Serve as the primary contact for urgent facility issues, such as HVAC failures, leaks, or power outages.
4. Provide maintenance of equipment in necropsy areas for the operation and maintenance of incinerator and hoist system. Serve as a backup for receiving carcasses and loading incinerator.
5. Maintain building exterior, including landscaping
6. Erect and work from ladders, scaffolds, and similar device.
7. Determine type of materials and supplies to be use.
8. Keep inventories of general use and janitorial supplies
9. Adapt commercially available materials to fit needs.
10. Document job time and materials used.
11. Keep facilities in a clean and presentable condition.
12. This role often requires on-call availability for emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
13. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

BMT 1:
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: 1 year of related experience.
Licensure: Valid Drivers' License

BMT II:
Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: 3 years of related experience.
Licensure: Valid driver's license.

Substitutions: An equivalent combination of related education and related experience may be considered for this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Duties require basic physical and mental skills and abilities, including proficiency with diagnostic and hand tools, power tools, heavy machinery or other equipment and maintenance software.

Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical wiring, plumbing, and HVAC systems.

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and other documents.

Use of basic or intermediate math, reading, or writing skills. Follow detailed instructions and procedures. May work under limited supervision and prioritize tasks independently.

Problem-Solving, with ability to diagnose issues and determine the best repair solutions.

Physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform manual tasks and lift heavy objects.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc
Occasional routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; travel or other inconveniences have advance notice; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor;
Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Job occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting more than 100 pounds.
