Position Function:

The camp counselor is responsible for leading and implementing activities and experiences to children in group setting. They will also be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in his/her group. The counselor will provide high quality life team building exercises for participants that focus on leadership and life skills.

Employees hired into Intermittent positions are limited to working no more than 720 hours per fiscal year.

Salary Grade:  UC

Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges.  For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide a constant positive example of direction and support for one 6 - student team.
2. Assist in facilitating life skills and leadership learning activities for camp attendees.
3. Fully engage in and assist with all activities and tasks associated with LeaderSTATE camp week including, but not limited to, check-in and check-out procedures, meals, wake-up/bedtime routines, meetings, leadership development activities, daily physical training, outings, preparation for presentations and tours.
4. Communicate needs and progress of camp attendees through active feedback during daily and weekly camp staff meetings as well as conduct final camp evaluations to improve camp quality.
5. Assist in developing and implementing additional camp supplemental activities, teaching materials or evaluations as needed.
6. Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities. Activities may include crafts, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, and physical exercise. This includes time spent on the bus.
7. Communicate with Residential Coordinator and Residential Instructor about participants’ behavior and experiences.
8. Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
9. Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to, being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma
Active work towards or completion of a Bachelor’s degree.

Focus: Provides guidance, direction, supervision, and support for approximately six to eight camp attendees in order to effectively lead them through one week of Life Skills and Leadership activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Basic understanding of student leadership development.
2. Basic mentoring skills.
3. Understanding and ability to manage fast-paced and hectic environments and schedules.
4. Excellent interpersonal and public speaking communication skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. Participation in daily physical training with camp attendees and staff ranging from slow to brisk jog for one mile at beginning and end of workout as well as strength training by a certified instructor. (All PT activities may be modified to fit the physical abilities of each participant.)
2. Frequently lifts 50 pounds.
3. May stand or walk for up to two hours at a time (during tours). Must live “in-residence” with other camp staff for duration of camp in a residence hall with a private room and community bathroom accommodations.
