Position Function:
Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine (MSU-CVM) offers a robust rotating small animal internship program that promotes clinical teaching and learning, supportive mentorship, fosters clinical autonomy all while allowing refinement of clinical efficiency, time management and multi-tasking skills. Our program is ideal for veterinary professionals who are eager to learn and grow as a new veterinarian whether wishing to pursue additional training prior to general practice or continual education towards residency training. We have an increased commitment to support staffing in order to promote a positive work environment. We provide communications training to all levels of our hospital including house officers which is provided as graduate level course work.

Specialty Intern in Small Animal Surgery
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Surgery Intern Responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:
1.) Sophomore Surgery Lab: During the fall and spring semesters, the Surgery Intern will assist faculty with instruction in the Sophomore Surgery Lab. The lab schedule varies but generally meets twice weekly with associated patient care days. Surgical Intern responsibilities will include assisting with didactic laboratories, preoperative patient assessments, after-hours patient concerns, surgical laboratories, post-operative patient care, medical record completion, and student evaluations.
2.) Clinical Duty: The Surgery Intern will be assigned clinical duty on the Small Animal Surgery Service when not participating with other teaching responsibilities. Clinical duty will include assisting residents and faculty with patient receiving, in-hospital patient management, surgical procedures, student instruction, weekend patient care, and after-hours emergency surgery (on a rotating basis). The Surgery Intern may have primary case responsibility with faculty supervision depending on caseload.
3.) Emergency Duty: The Surgery Intern will, on a limited rotating basis with or without surgery residents, have primary on-call case responsibility for the treatment of surgical emergencies. The Surgery Intern will always have a surgery faculty member as a backup.
4.) Research: It is expected that the Surgery Intern will be available to assist faculty and residents with ongoing research projects. Surgery Interns may also complete a research
project as the principal investigator with faculty guidance. Exposure to research and publication will be a primary goal of the Small Animal Surgery Internship position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must be eligible for employment in the U.S. at the time they apply for a position at MSU-CVM. Mississippi State University employs only citizens of the US, Canada, and Mexico, nationals of the US, and aliens authorized to work in the US by the time of commencement of the position.
Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary school (see http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/colleges_accredited/allcolleges.asp) and have passed the NAVLE licensure examination, or a graduate that has completed the entire ECFVG qualification process (see http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/default.asp) by the time of the commencement of this position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
