Under supervision, assist with necropsy procedures of small and large animals, sample collection and provide general support to veterinary pathologists in the necropsy area at the MS Veterinary Research & Diagnostic Laboratory in Pearl, MS

Salary Grade:  13

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assist veterinary pathologists with necropsy examinations
2. Prepare animal carcasses for necropsies, including operating a hoist for large animals
3. Conduct anatomic dissections per the preferences and instructions of the pathologist on duty
4. Utilize power saws, knives, scissors, and other surgical instruments to perform or assist in the necropsy procedure and sample collection
5. Collect and maintain samples for laboratory testing; oversee sample storage
6. Assist the pathologists with sample accessioning
7. Assist with photographic documentation of lesions or necropsy specimens
8. Be responsible for disposition of remains, including maintaining chain of custody of legal cases and coordinating with crematory services
9. Be responsible for use and maintenance of the incinerator
10. Perform quality evaluations of one-day-old chickens (chick-checks)
11. Support the laboratory quality assurance program
12. Act as a liaison with sample receiving personnel
13. Participate in the laboratory’s response to outbreaks or disease investigations, including collection of samples and disinfection procedures
14. Perform cleaning and disinfection of necropsy laboratory and related areas, equipment, and clothing
15. Be responsible for inventory, including determining needs and ordering necropsy supplies and equipment, and scheduling equipment maintenance
16. Support the histology section in gross sectioning of necropsy samples
17. Ensure that safety regulations are followed
18. Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s Life/Animal Science/Biology/Veterinary Technology or related area

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree
Basic knowledge of animal anatomy and medical terminology.
Experience in Forensic Science

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Excellent multitasking skills
• Skill in the use of computers and related software applications
• Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards
• Skill in providing guidance and instruction in laboratory protocols and in the safe use of laboratory equipment

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Work is normally performed in a typical interior laboratory area
• Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where the likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
• Work hours may vary including working after 5:00 pm and weekends; frequent interruptions based on changing priorities; involve occasional exposure to requests from people other than immediate supervisor.
• Job frequently requires sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
Job requires standing, walking, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
